What can I see in Niokolo-Koba National Park?

1. Can I see lions and elephants?

The lions are there, but they are rarely seen due to their nocturnal habits and the dense vegetation; you will perhaps see their tracks, but don’t count on a direct sighting - that would be an unexpected extra for your visit.
In 2011 the population of elephants in the Park was officially estimated at less then 10 ; they live in remote zones which are not accessible without prior preparations and authorisation.

2. How to visit the Park?

It is not possible to rent a vehicle or to organise a safari from within the Park; you thus have to either come in with your own or a rented vehicle, or with an organised tour. The entry fee is F CFA 2,000 (about € 3) per person per day (including partial days) plus a one-time payment of F CFA 5,000 (about € 7.50) per vehicle.

3. Can I trek in the Park?

Except for the plateau of Mount Assirik with autorisation, visitors can only move about in vehicles, accompanied by a guide. But it is possible to get down from your vehicle at designated observation points, and also on the tracks on the advice of a guide to get a better view. GIE NIOKOLO has proposed to the Park administration to organise guided treks as is permitted in some African parks.

4. Can I visit the Park in my ordinary car?

That is not forbidden but strongly advised against; it would be virtually impossible during the rainy season. If you absolutely want to do it, your guide will help you to navigate the better tracks, with great care, but your visit will be less satisfying; rather contact a tourist agency or rent a 4-wheel drive vehicle (see the section on "Services").

5. How can I take a cruise on the Gambia River?

The motorboat of the Park (locally called the "pirogue") takes tourists for an observation cruise of an hour and a half on the river starting from the Simenti Hotel. This outing will give you a close view of the animal life (hippopotami, crocodiles, antelopes, wart hogs, monkeys, numerous species of birds, etc.). in a beautiful and pleasant environment. The trips begin in the morning before 10 AM or in the afternoon from 4 PM.

If there are at least 4 passengers the price is F CFA 5,000 (about € 7.50) per person; otherwise the passengers will pay a total of F CFA 20,000 (about € 30) to rent the boat. You can reserve your place at the hotel or your guide can do it for you. Be sure to reserve in advance. Your guide will accompany you at no extra charge.
